We were incredulous when Ethiopia decided to install an “Animal Farm” style export system that just mixed the “wheat with the chaff.” This lousy system was designed to raise the price for Ethiopian coffees, no matter the quality, by supressing the provenance. It would be like Bordeaux saying there is only one wine from Bordeaux: Bordeaux! The result: Ethiopia is crushed. Many small farmers must be out of business, which lets the vultures come in and buy up the farms for a song. Let’s hope not.
